2006 Chevy Malibu Clunk in Steering

Can you tell me what the deal is with the clunking in the power steering column on the 2006 Chevy Malibu? Mine is making a popping noise when turning at slow speeds. I see a huge number of complaints about this problem all over the internet.

GM has had problems with the intermediate steering shaft on many of their vehicles over the last few years.

There have been many different service bulletins to address this issue, if in fact it is the shaft on your car.
First bulletins had us remove the shaft apply a special grease, then later they told us to replace them, then told us to lube a different area of the shaft and re-torque with a new bolt. Most recently, replace with a new part number shaft.
It would have to be inspected in order to determine if it is the intermediate steering shaft or the stabilizer links. If a shaft, they should take care of it because of the years of problems with them. If the links, that could be a little harder, since these were not as much of a problem as the shaft.

Door Chime Warning

2007 Chevy Malibu LS

Door ajar warning. Checked alarm found nothing wrong.

I have a door ajar alarm  all doors are shut. The GM dealer is still trying to solve. It goes on then you don't see it for a while. I think its the door assembly latch computer chip. I'm in NY. The car is at Doyle Chevy in Webster. I love the car. It saddens me door ajar the door light will not go out.

This can be any one of the door latches.
The ajar switch is part of each latch.
Need to find which one by using a scanner and watching Body Control Module data, or tapping on each latch to try to get the light to act up.

Power Steering Swap

Motor in 05 Malibu automatic shot. Have engine from manual drive 04 Saturn (both2.2). everything hook up ok till went to connect power steering. 04 Saturn didn't have power steering. Need to changed intake cam in the 04 engine since the cam does not have the end that drives the steering pump. Can I just get another intake cam with that end or do I need to change both cam.

Answer: In order to get the power steering to work, all you would need to do is replace the intake cam housing assembly and it will work just fine.

Belt Pulley Squealing

POWER STEERING COOLER started leaking about 6 weeks ago no power steering. Wife picked me up said it was making a different noise. I lifted the hood squealing noise coming from top pulley. It looked to be rubbing on metal on engine. A friend pried a space so it's not rubbing but pulley still not spinning once u quit trying to start it the pulley moves a little. Belt moves a little. It looks like the pulley is bent.

Answer: Sounds like the power steering pulley has broken inside the pump. That is why there is no power steering and the pulley is not moving. If you can actually pry the pulley away, then it has for sure broke. You will need to replace the power steering pump.

The dealer took care of my steering shaft for free on my 2005 Malibu. Thanks for the info.
