Question: Do I need special equipment to change an electrical ignition module for a 2001 Chevy Malibu and if so how much is the standard rate for the labor cost?

Answer: Actually the ignition control module is pretty simple to replace. The module sits under the row of ignition coils. Just follow the spark plug wires toward the back of the engine. Where they connect, those are the ignition coils. To remove those, you need a 5.5 MM socket on a small extension on your ratchet. Remove the 2 bolts on each coil. One on the front and one on the rear between the spark plug wire towers, on each coil, lift to each coil up and put it aside, then disconnect the electrical connectors on either side of the module and remove it. Sit the new module down on the bracket and wiggle it a little to make sure it is flush, then reinstall the coils. If you were to pay a mechanic, expect approx. 1 hour labor charge times the shop rate.

Powertrain Control Module Programmin

2004 Chev Malibu LT. Question: can you re-program a powertrain control module or buy a used one at the wreckers. The engine trouble light is on and has been for awhile?

Answer: A check engine light does not mean that the computer is bad. I would assume that you had a scan of codes and it was diagnosed properly as being bad, so, yes you can reprogram a used PCM. It would have to be the correct one for YOUR car. Then you would need to take it to the dealer to have programmed to the VIN # of your Malibu. Then the theft / security system would have to be relearned.
