1996 GMC Yukon Transmission and 4 Wheel Drive

1996 GMC Yukon SLT 4WD 5.7 L Vortec. Question: After I stopped the vehicle, the vehicle would not move in any gear. The 2 wheel drive,4 high, and 4 low buttons would not light up when touched. When I put it in park it makes a grinding noise. What could this be?

Answer: There could be a couple different problems here. You could have a transmission that has gone out or is locked up, or there is something wrong with the transfer case. Since you mention the lights for the 4wd not coming on, I would lean towards the latter. If there is something broken inside the transfer case, it could cause the vehicle not to move. If it feels like it's trying to move but not, you definitely have a problem in there. You could try removing the encoder motor on the side of the transfer case and try manually shifting the transfer case into another range to see if that helps. Otherwise, you'd have to get the truck in the air and take the transfer case out and disassemble it to see what's wrong.

Chevy Tahoe Not Catch Gears

2000 Chevy Tahoe. 5.7 Vortec. Question: when i put it in gear its like it doesn't catch gears it wont move.

Answer: Sounds like you have an internal problem in the transmission. Be sure to check that the fluid level is full. If not, add to the full mark. See if it looks or smells burned. If it is, you could try changing the filter and fluid. With the pan down inspect for debre in the bottom, or covering the magnet that is in the pan. You could also try an additive that you can buy at any parts store But, being 11 years old, it may be time for an overhaul.
